Locks are Only for Honest People

Triad Security Systems offers an array of services to clients to help businesses of varying size and in numerous industries keep their facility, employees and assets safe from theft, vandalism, frivolous lawsuits and other forms of criminal mischief. One basic service that should not be overlooked by commercial clients is the importance of maintaining locks and keys. If a visitor tries to gain access to your facility and finds a locked door, an honest person will walk away knowing they are not permitted, for whatever reason, to that door at that time. Perhaps it is after hours and your business is closed, for example. However, a would-be burglar would see the locked door as a sign that no one is inside the building and as an invitation to get in and have free reign. Theft of expensive equipment and inventory or destruction of your office space might be one way that a criminal mind seeks justice for being fired. Or perhaps a thug is looking for items to sell on the street for cash. In other cases, the sick thrill of being somewhere they are not supposed to be and vandalizing what you’ve worked so hard for is reason enough to find a way past that locked door.

“The most crucial thing for commercial clients is key control,” says one of Triad’s licensed NJ locksmiths, John Burkert. As new employees or contractors come and go from a company, new keys are made and hopefully returned or discarded upon their resignation, termination or completion of the project. This prevents an individual from gaining access to a facility where they are no longer working. Industry recommendations state an entire building should be rekeyed every 7-10 years to ensure integrity for this form of security. If this is the only way a client has to keep unauthorized visitors from gaining access to the building, it is important that all keys are accounted for. Triad’s licensed locksmiths are on staff so you’ll only need to work with Triad’s security experts at one company – no subcontractors. Triad’s locksmiths have over 25 years of experience in their profession and can recommend appropriate locking devices and key management systems to clients.

The locks themselves also need regular maintenance to keep them working properly. This includes routine lubrication and tightening. A client should not neglect their locks to the point that they just fall out of the door. This circumstance would make it easy for a burglar to break into the building. Although it is more likely to occur in residential locks, there is a possibility that low-end or poorly maintained commercial locks can fall victim to “lock bumping.” Lock bumping is a fast, inconspicuous way criminals can gain access to a locked facility. It was easy to research for this article via the Internet but, that also means it is easy for criminals to educate themselves on how to bump a lock or make a better bump key. “Bumping a key or a lock” or “lock bumping” involves producing a “bump key,” inserting it into a deadbolt or doorknob and tapping it. The way that the bump key is made and the tapping of the key causes the pins and springs to move inside the lock. After a few taps, the bump key is turned and opens the door without any obvious sign of forced entry.

Triad has products that provide a higher level of security to commercial, industrial and government clients. Medeco, for example, has stringent controls in place to permit key duplication by authorized personnel only. Authorized personnel are determined by the holder of the company’s Medeco certificate and key duplications can only be made by the authorized person holding the certificate. The company has patented technology to manufacture high security locks and have been providing quality locking devices since the 1960’s. While some businesses might consider Medeco locks expensive, the cost that a company would incur in a burglary or business invasion (i.e. loss of inventory, equipment, destruction of property, etc.) not to mention what could happen if a would-be burglar entered to be surprised by an employee working late or on the weekend – better security is invaluable.
